Jake Ceresna, Mike Wakefield and Ralph Holley are all tied for the league lead in sacks with 8. With one week remaining, it is theoretically possible that the 2024 CFL sack leader may finish with less than 10 sacks. I don't think that will have happened since the CFL started recording sacks in the early 1980's. Mark Fulton also posted on Twitter that sacks were down this year. A few people posted their believed reasons, which include (i) quick horizontal passing games, (ii) imports at G spots, (iii) defensive rotation.
BTW, the NFL has managed to piece together, more or less, sack totals from before the introduction of it as a stat in the early 1980's, so they now know how many stats Deacon Jones got for example. I don't suppose the CFL kept records to piece together sack totals from before 1981? Rodney Harding has the official sack record for the Argos, but I imagine Jim Corrigall might have the unofficial record.

With QBs getting rid of the balls quickly now (high % ball control short passes), I would have thought it would be more difficult to register a Sack, yet the Argos recorded 44 I believe, 20 or so fewer from last season.

And all the sack leaders are interior / DT types, which is odd / almost never happens.
Betts with a full season might have had something to say there.
A bunch of teams need to recruit better at pass rush DE and stop handing jobs to poor, mediocre or aging re-treads (like Nic Usher)

The Betts who managed two sacks in seven games this year?

Credit needs to be given to the offensive lines around the league also.OV Argo wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 6:28 pm And all the sack leaders are interior / DT types, which is odd / almost never happens.

Nope, the Betts who led the entire league in sacks, by a lot, just the previous season when he had a full TC run at the season.paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 8:42 pmThe Betts who managed two sacks in seven games this year?

Interesting that Argo draft pick, cast-off DT Justin Sambu, had 4 sacks in about a half season of limited playing time after the Stamps signed him.

I think they got close to 70 in 2023, which I felt was an outlier.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 6:09 pm With QBs getting rid of the balls quickly now (high % ball control short passes), I would have thought it would be more difficult to register a Sack, yet the Argos recorded 44 I believe, 20 or so fewer from last season.
Teams in the 80s were routinely getting 70+ sacks.

Simpleton OC's had no idea how to defend against a pass rush then. Will wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 4:38 pmI think they got close to 70 in 2023, which I felt was an outlier.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 6:09 pm With QBs getting rid of the balls quickly now (high % ball control short passes), I would have thought it would be more difficult to register a Sack, yet the Argos recorded 44 I believe, 20 or so fewer from last season.
