I believe that the Argos saw the emergence of both Herslow and Mital in 2025, and decided that they'd flip the ratio at the receiver position. Whereas, it was previously Coxie, Daniels, Brissett, Mital & Ungerer (3 CAN, 2 US), they are now envisioning the receiver corps being Coxie, Polk, Herslow, Mital and Ungerer (3 US, 2 CAN). The Argos should look at a depth piece at CAN receiver (assuming one is available), but signing Gittens would've created a logjam at that position, IMO.

Jim Barker and John Hufnagel have both had reputations, in the past, of preferring to not build their teams through free agency. Now this requires a strong scouting staff and pipeline in both the US and Canada, but if you're asking yourself and questioning why the Argos haven't been especially active then there is part of your explanation. They've also made Pickett the highest paid LB (well at least at the time) and Shepley the highest paid OL (well at least at the time).

Nothing against Ungerer, whom I really like, but I'd prefer Gittens at Z. Presumably he's more expensive, tho. While clearly the team wants and needs to start Polk, Coxie and Herslow, going with just two starting NATs at receiver carries an element of risk, ratio-wise. I personally see only one NAT currently on the roster (Judge) who is unquestionably capable of starting on defence. (Ojo and/or Blackburn might get to that level, but it's obviously not proven yet. I'm not expecting Kongbo to suddenly become a starter at this stage.) So we're looking at two receivers (with no proven backup at the moment) and four on an o-line that has quite a few question marks IMO.

Not sure whether this is true, but I saw reports on Twitter that Gittens was seeking $200k which seems steep to me. I am fine with Ungerer at Z, as he has played well there the past 3 seasons. They could use some additional NAT receiving depth and the likes of Drew Wolitarsky and Mitch Picton are still available.

I don’t think the schedule has anything to do with signing or not signing Gittens.

Ungerer is a good WR but he is not a potential game breaker like Gittens. With Mital and Gittens as starters and Ungerer as a rotational player, the team would have been stronger than Mital and Ungerer and some draft choice hopeful as backup. It is even worse seeing Gittens going to Hamilton.

I am not sure that Gittens, playing the Z position, would be anymore of a gamebreaker than Ungerer.

Hopefully with Barker and Hufnagel's connections, the team is able to snag a diamond in the rough or two like when the Argos found Qwan'tez Stiggers.

I disagree with this. Gittens was an East Division all-star in 2021 playing exclusively the Z. He played Z for about half of 2022 (when he was again an all-star), and was almost as productive there as at slotback. Over their careers, they've played almost the same number of games (88 for KG, 86 for DU). Gittens has been targeted almost twice as often (442 vs. 234), has twice as many receptions (314 vs 159), has 19 TDs to Ungerer's eight, and has a better ypc (13.3 vs. 12.0). That's a big enough sample size to establish Gittens as a more productive and effective receiver IMO. The size difference also makes Gittens a tougher matchup IMO.

In 3 Down Nations daily article focused on the Riders, it revealed Picton is leaning towards retirement. As for Gittens, 200K for a guy who averaged 10 yards per reception in 2024 & 12.5 last season seems very steep. Basically an overpaid possession guy. I don't see much on the current Argos roster behind Mital & Ungerer III as far as National depth in the Receiving core, so it looks like the draft (6 selections in the first 31) could yield a prospect.

It doesn't seem that long ago that the Argos had the best National talent regarding Receivers.
