And the 3 big receivers all seemed to become head cases at the same time. Gurley, Elliott and Hazelton.

True. After the release of those three plus Phil Bates, they were down to the likes of Llevi Noel and Brian Jones, who just weren't starting calibre receivers. Devier Posey did make his debut though so all was not completely lost.

Elliott was awesome, master of the ball spin even when coming way short of a first down.
It didn't help that Ricky Ray wasn't particularly healthy in 2016 either. They started the season well, but then Ray got injured and the floor caved in with Logan Kilgore at QB.
