And I’ll ask again. What would everyone that wants to die on this hill do if 4 or 5 owners were tired of losing money on these teams and walked away?
I love the game as is. Absolutely in a perfect world, I would not change a thing. But I would rather have this future version of the CFL game than no CFL at all. I mean, we’ve already lowered our attendance expectations and we are still not hitting those lower expectations. People are so quick to throw out that word “marketing” but there is more to it than that.
Even in Vancouver, they need to bring in a high priced musical talent once a year to get a great crowd. Problem with that is it people were leaving after the musical act. Something needs to be tried to bring in new, young fans. People need to just accept it. If you’re an Argos fan, you will still be an Argos fan. If not, just leave and stop whining.
How is changing the rules going to change the hearts and minds of those who don't support the CFL because they consider it minor league football, a bush league, etc.?
It won't; but those types might well be attracted to a new league, with plenty of hype behind it and with American teams involved and playing American rules and maybe a decent US $$$ TV contract. A spring league that serves as a feeder to the NFL, that if planned out better and with a few Canadian teams to create more interest, might do much better than recent US minor pro leagues.
The CFL "owners" (who are invited - Sask. & Winnipeg have nicer more modern stadiums and BC has a big dome; Calgary or Montreal might have to build new ones) get to be involved in an exciting, innovative new football league that is so much better than the same old CFL, and where they are all losing millions & million$ every year. And with the Ticats & Argos out of the way, opens the door for MLSE or whatever wannabe in chief wins that lottery, to be promised an NFL team for down the road. Southern Ontario could easily support a new NFL team in Toronto and continue to help support the Bills as well as they have for decades.
So, the old CFL gets to attract some new fans, and would count on a good majority of the old ones to remain loyal. As is plain to see from reading football forums and social media comments on the CFL's "significant changes", there are plenty of CFL supporters who would rally to their defence no-matter what changes were maid - they could have announced 4 downs, a fair catch, the ratio totally removed and players wearing pink tutus and clown masks as uniforms, and they would still have their loyal supporters, making rationalizations and excuses for those changes. They might lose a few old die-hard type (dinosaurs ?) type fans - more than they think I'd bet - but those types can pi$$-off and go yell at the clouds, and can still watch (hopefully) old, real Canadian football like U Sports or Junior ball; and an increase in interest for those levels of Canadian ball would help them lots. Win - win.
